The Deforestation-Free Call to Action for Leather

April 20, 2023 0 Comments

Textile Exchange and Leather Working Group, two global non-profit organizations, jointly launched The No deforestation call to action for leather to promote fair, transparent and deforestation-free leather supply chains. Animal husbandry, the main driver of deforestation and the conversion of ecosystems, offers the leather industry the opportunity to make positive changes.

At the moment, the industry shows a variable Commitment to solving the problems of deforestation and conversion. Brands and retailers that use leather must quickly reorganize their complex and often opaque supply chains, making it difficult to identify the sources of raw materials.

The call to action without deforestation for leather is a cross-sectoral initiative that encourages brands to take measures against deforestation and conversion related to leather sourcing. The objective is to protect wildlife habitats, preserve biodiversity and carbon reserves and protect human rights.

The Initiative sets clear expectations for brands and provides them with tools and advice. This guide has been developed in consultation with organizations such as the WWF, the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) and the Accountability Framework Initiative (AFi).

Brands can now join the call to action without deforestation for leather, with the first signatories, including notable names such as adidas, American Eagle Outfitters, All Saints, Capri Holdings, H&M Group, Kering, Mango, Marks & Spencer, PUMA, Range Revolution, Reformation, Roots, R. M. Williams and Tapestry.

Collaboration with supply chains
Signatory brands that join the call to action without deforestation for leather should work with farms and supply chains to establish requirements for deforestation and non-conversion procurement. They must also define and achieve supply chain objectives, invest in traceable and sustainable leather, implement traceability systems, defend human rights and report on progress made each year. The goal of the Initiative is to leverage consumer-focused brands to drive change, promote equitable responsibility for forest conservation, increase the availability of verified sustainable livestock farms, improve visibility in complex supply chains and increase transparency through collective progress reports.
